Discussions, sprinters, Stage 5

Here we are at Stage 5 of the 2008 Tour de France and I'm mystified. Not because it's been a crazy Tour so far. Not because three different riders have been in yellow over the first four days. Not because my pick for the overall win when these three weeks are up has fallen fast and is down by nearly two minutes after a horrible showing yesterday.

But because I just had a conversation with Koko and she told me that she knew who won today. I gave her three names and NONE was right.

This stage is a stage for sprinters (or so I think having not watched it yet). And the names I gave her should have easily wrapped up the race today in places 1, 2 and 3.

But NO!

So I'm firing up the Tivo and turning on the stage. More to come in a minute about the particulars of this stage and about my thoughts...bearing in mind that I know three people who didn't win today.

SPOILER - Standings after Stage 4, TDF08

Here is how the riders are placed after today's Individual Time Trial.

A nice little shake-up. My riders didn't win, but they're all placed in the top 10.

See you tomorrow for the first of a more difficult and long stage. It's 232KM and goes from Cholet to Châteauroux. The stage is flat and I expect that it will be won by Thor Hushovd or Robbie Mc Ewen. UNLESS there's a major breakaway. See you tomorrow.

Still watching stage 4

This time trial is amazing. It's one of only two individual time trials in this year's race. And without the Prologue this year, the results are a bit of a surprise so far...at least to me.

I'll post all the stats at about 9PM along with my thoughts on tomorrow's stage 5.

What's really interesting is Bicycling Magazines unabashed promotion of stages not to miss. but the funny part is they are saying that about MANY of the stages in this year's Tour de France. So what should we believe?

More coming...

So much of it is luck

If you look at Denis Menchov and the stuff written about him before this year's Tour de France, you would think he'd be in the catbird seat for a podium finish.

Well, we're three stages into the 2008 event and Menchov has hit a bump in the road that has put him pretty far back in the overall standings.

Think about it. Had Menchov not been caught up in a crash in yesterday's stage 3, he'd be right up front with Valverde and Evans and the other big names that are less than two minutes behind the leader.

What's going to happen in today's time trial is a likely fall from the front by Romain Feillu of France. Even with his 1:45 lead, I'm guessing that Valverde, Hincapie and even Menchov will leap over this little Frenchman.

After looking at the stats, Menchov is at 2:30 to the leader which means he's at :45 to Valverde and that's going to be tough to make up. Even though we're only a few stages in.

Well, I'm about to watch today's time trial stage and will be back after I find out what happens.

*By the way, cycling is on the minds of people everywhere. I wrote about it on my regular blog and Bella English wrote about it in the Boston Globe this past weekend.

New approach

I've had a bunch of readers tell me that it's too difficult to insulate themselves from Tour de France results during the day of a stage. And my SPOILER notes don't assist them in remaining free from spoilers.

So, in the interest of keeping readers happy I'm changing the approach I use when covering the Tour.

Going forward - including today's already finalized Time Trial - I'm going to give a more introspective and commentary-based blog posting for each stage.

I'll give the results and standings at the end of the day so you can still revel in the statistics without hopping all over the Internet. But my notes and comments will be more forward-looking.

You might even say that I'll be making some predictions and evaluating the cycling prowess of certain athletes.

Let me know how this works for you.

**In the event that something major happens and I can't help myself from writing about it, I'll put SPOILER in the title and will not lead with the pertinent details - I'll instead softly lead up to the events of the day.

Thanks for your feedback!

SPOILER - Top 11 in Stage 3

Here's how the top 11 fared in stage 3. I made it 11 because Team Columbia's riders Kirchen and Cavendish were 10 and 11. Will give entire standings later today or tonight.

Crash info, no other spoiler

Gomez Marchante (SDV) has abanonded the Tour de France after the crash. He is on his way to the hospital now in an ambulance.

This is from the TDF official site at LeTour.

Time Trial tomorrow

Tuesday brings with it the Individual Time Trial.

THAT's gonna be a great day.

Stay tuned for more info on today's stage 3.

SPOILER - Breakaway

I'm not saying that the breakaway will win today's stage 3, but with 51KM to go, the breakaway is about six minutes ahead of the peloton.

Actually, they are 6:44 ahead and there are four riders in that group. Watching the broadcast, the rain looks like it's stopped and there is sun on some parts of the course.

It's still not going to matter. AND that means that Valverde will not be in yellow tomorrow unless the peloton succeeds in yanking the breakaway back.

By the way, I misspelled peloton a few days ago and I apologize.

Wet Roads=Flat Tires

Stage 3 of the Tour is underway and the roads are wet.

What this means for cyclists - if you're just reading this because you like sports on TV - is that there will likely be more flats during the day.

This happens because water will make the tires wet (duh) and debris on the road will then stick to the water and therefore stick to the tire. Then, after riding on that tire with the debris on it, the debris will start to work its way into the rubber and eventually through the tire causing a flat or a blowout.

It makes rainy stages a little more sketchy.

One thing I do know from being a Tour spectator in person is that the roads they ride on are in very nice shape. Wherever possible the Tour organizers have gotten local municipalities to resurface the roads on which the Tour will travel.

Some older and more character-rich roads don't get the same treatment.

Shortly I'll add some posts about today's stage.

1. Alejandro Valverde (ESP) GCE
2. Philippe Gilbert (BEL) FDJ
3. Jerome Pineau (FRA) BTL
4. Kim Kirchen (LUX) THR
5. Riccardo Ricco (ITA) SDV

More stats to come including the standings of the entire field after stage 1. At least one rider dropped out of the race with a broken wrist.

SPOILER - Stage 1 Winner - 2008 Tour de France

The winner of the first stage of the 2008 Tour de France is Alejandro Valverde.

He rides for team Caisse d'Epargne.

He's also my pick to win the tour this year.

WOWSA.

Even if you know who won this stage, it's well worth it to watch the last four minutes of today's stage for some amazing cycling.

Huge time gaps at the end.

I'll post the overall standings later.

10KM TO GO

Gap of 11 seconds and Cadel Evans is screaming up toward the breakaway with the peleton in tow.

SPOILER ALERTS ------ NO INFO HERE, but future posts will include the word "SPOILER" in the title if it gives info about stage winners on the day of that stage.

Will post in about 15 minutes about the winner and the standings after stage 1 of the 2008 Tour de France.

Race Map

Just a screen shot of the map. It's a very similar route to 2004 and hits many of the same towns. This includes Alpe d'Huez, Nimes and more. The only thing missing is a 21st team and Lance Armstrong.

Oh, and I was in France just prior to the 2004 Tour.

Tour Riders for 2008

Here are the riders in this year's Tour de France. It begins today, by the way.

The list starts with team name and then goes by bib number. The rider's home country is the abbreviation at the end of his name. Sorry for the jumble. It was cut and pasted here.

There are 180 riders in this year's Tour de France - one fewer team than in most years.

Hotels near the Tour de France

Hus left this comment on my TDF07 blog...

New already: for the Tour de France 2008 I developed a Google Map in terrain view with all the stages of the Tour de France 2008. See:
http://www.hotels-in-france.nl/index.php/Le-Tour-2008.html

It gives hotel locations in towns that lie along the 2008 Tour de France route.

Thanks Hus!

Giro complete...here comes the TDF!

With Alberto Contador the 2008 winner of the Giro D'Italia, the next major race on the docket is the Dauphiné Libéré beginning next week in Avignon, France.

And, because we've just cracked the first day of June, we've got a mere month before we find out if Astana will be allowed in the Tour de France in July.

According to reports - READ THE ENTIRE STORY...

Organisers of the Tour de France, run by the Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO) said earlier this year that the doping scandals which plagued Astana at last year's French race had left them with little choice despite the team undergoing a mass clear-out.

The team's former leader, Alexandre Vinokourov, was fired after testing positive for a blood transfusion during last year's Tour de France.

Weeks after the Vinokourov controversy his fellow Kazakh Andrey Kashechkin also tested positive for blood doping. Other teams riders, including Matthias Kessler and Eddy Mazzoleni, were also involved in doping affairs.

Unlike the French, the Italians relented and finally allowed Astana in.

But I'm worried that this year's Tour will still start with one less team than in previous years and will lack the excitement that Contador, Levi Leipheimer and other Astana riders might have offered.

Stay tuned here while I ramp up the recaps and start to provide my predictions for the 2008 Tour de France.

Keep riding!
