It looks like it will be Cadel Evans in Yellow to start tomorrow's stage 11. But I'll have to recheck some standings when they come out. I'm typing this as the stage unfolds, so I don't know what the overall standings are yet. And Kim Kirchen has yet to cross the line.

SPOILER - 10KM to go

This is ridiculous. There are attacks all over the place on an uphill finish!

Right now - reading and watching - I've found that...

There are 20 seconds between five riders at the front (including Frank Schleck who was caught by some other riders) and Cadel Evans, Sastre, Duenas Nevado, Menchov and Ricco.

Looks like I was right to keep Denis Menchov on my fantasy team. But Ricco is killing me!

More in a second. They're only 10KM out, as I said.

SPOILER - Lots of big names dropped by FRANK SCHLECK

Here's how it stands only a few KM from the finish...

Frank Schleck attached and is in the lead. Kim Kirchen was dropped. So was Jens Voight. Di Gregorio (who led at one point by more than eight minutes) has been caught. Oscar Freire was dropped. Valverde and riders around him are 2:34 behind Kirchen.

Holy cow.

If you don't know Frank Schleck, he and his brother are in the race together on the same CSC squad.

Schleck won at Alpe d'Huez in 2006 and is a very consistent climber.

His weakness is time trialing, but if he uses CSC's team resources, he could be a contender for a number of days until we get to the final time trial in the penultimate stage.

His finishes in the TDF have been 11th in 2006 and 17th in 2007.

Changes

As I mentioned, the breakaway group has gone into disrepair and now the race - on the col du Tourmalet - has one rider in the lead, seven in a chase group, two in an intermediate group, the peloton, and a whole slew of riders spit out the back.

The gaps are 0:30, 7:40, 0:15 and then a bunch of assorted times.

Reading those, the 30-second rider is ahead of seven riders who are 7:40 ahead of a couple riders who are 0:15 ahead of the peloton.

24 in breakaway

Here's who is about a minute ahead of the peloton in the breakaway group. We're less than 75KM into the race, so this will most certainly change.

The 24 escapees began their move at the 10km mark. The riders involved are: Popovych (SIL), Cancellara (CSC), Gutierrez (GCE), Burghardt (THR), Augustyn and Cheula (BAR), Pozzato (LIQ), Le Mevel (C.A), Tosatto (QST), Dupont (ALM), Fothen, Lang and Wegmann (GST), Feillu and Vogondy (AGR), Freire (RAB), Fedrigo (BTL), Chavanel, Di Gregorio and Roy (FDJ), Bertogliati and De La Fuente (SDV) and Duque (COF).

Happy Bastille Day

In France, today is Bastille Day and past Tours de France have seen Frenchmen destroy the field to win stages on this national holiday.

Right now (or really as I'm reading dispatches and watching Tivo) there are eight French riders in a breakaway group of 24.

This group is only a minute ahead of the peloton, but it's the largest breakaway group of this year's race and includes some big names that could stay away. EVEN over the hors category climbs and brutal layout of the stage.

Cadel's Crash

YESTERDAY, don't get all riled up.

Reportedly, when Cadel Evans crashed in stage 9, he smashed his helmet to bits and skinned himself from head to toe.

He's still in second place overall and DID start stage 10.

Mind games? Kim Kirchen

The Yellow Jersey owner in the 2008 Tour de France might be playing mind games with the press and the rest of the field - ala Lance Armstrong's feigned weakness in prior tours.

Yesterday Kirchen said that he felt a bit spent and if he rode stage 10 the way he rode stage 9, he'd be dropped by the peloton.

He also commented that team Columbia had done a ton of work thus far and other teams were still fresh and hadn't contributed much at the front of the pack. This could be interpreted by some to mean that the fresh teams could attack and beat team Columbia on stages like today's difficult journey.

Today has two hors category climbs and I think it will break the field apart.

Only time will tell. More thoughts to come.

iPhone - off-topic TDF note

The new iPhone has reportedly sold one million units already. The thing came out on Friday and it's now Monday morning at 10AM.

ONE MILLION SOLD!

That's insanity. How great does a product have to be to sell a million in a single weekend?

I bring this up because the 2009 Tour de France might just be podcast, twittered and blogged via an iPhone.

My plan is to attend each stage of that race and report on it via new technology. Maybe there will be something better by then, but I doubt it.

Stage 10 Overview, Picks and Comment

Stage 10 is only 156KM long, but is tough tough tough.

It climbs over the Tourmalet and has a mountaintop finish as well.

There are a handful of climbs in the stage, but two of them are hors category and one is the Col du Tourmalet (as mentioned) that takes place about halfway through the stage.

If you've got a climber on your fantasy team, you're in the money. Make your picks based on who is the best climber in the race. That's why I think I'll go with Oscar Pereiro or Carlos Sastre.

And I seem to be a broken record, but I'm sure one of these stages HAS to break the GC wide open. We'll see if two hors category Pyrenees climbs will do it.
