Better Diagnosis for Pereiro

From letour.com,

Despite early diagnosis of a possible broken femur for Pereiro, the race director Christian Prudhomme has just confirmed that the 2006 Tour champion has sustained a broken shoulder; nothing else. He is on his way to hospital in Cuneo.

CRASH on the descent

Oscar Pereiro crashed at the 80KM point of the race, during the descent on the back side of col Agnel.

According to race radio, Pereiro slammed into the guardrail and launched down to the road below. He broke his femur and his shoulder and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Accounts say that he was conscious the entire time.

The crash - on wet roads - has dramatically slowed the rest of the peloton and the breakaway bunch is now up around 15 minutes ahead.

As noted, Pereiro was given the status of winner of the 2006 Tour de France after Floyd Landis' appeal fell flat. So the 2006 champion is out of the 2008 race.

Now there are 154 riders in the race. If this keeps up, we'll barely have enough riders to make a peloton by the end of Stage 15.

SPOILER - 20KM to go

With a mere 20KM to go, Moinard still has about a minute advantage over the 11 riders on his tail.

He's crested the Col del Bouich and is pedaling fast.

Oscar Pereiro is still in no-mans-land ahead of the peloton and behind the 12 guys in the lead. His deficit is 14:30.

SPOILER - Less than 30KM to go

Amael Moinard’s lead is down to 1:45 and the pack behind him is gaining. In that group are Arvesen, Ballan, Botcharov, Fofonov, Elmiger, Wegmann, Moerenhout, Velo, Vaugrenard, Pozzato and Fedrigo.

Then, Oscar Pereiro is the lone rider in no-man's land about a minute and a half ahead of the peloton - which is at 16:30.

Moinard has started the category 3 Col del Bouich.

Stage 10 Overview, Picks and Comment

Stage 10 is only 156KM long, but is tough tough tough.

It climbs over the Tourmalet and has a mountaintop finish as well.

There are a handful of climbs in the stage, but two of them are hors category and one is the Col du Tourmalet (as mentioned) that takes place about halfway through the stage.

If you've got a climber on your fantasy team, you're in the money. Make your picks based on who is the best climber in the race. That's why I think I'll go with Oscar Pereiro or Carlos Sastre.

Gimme your choices.

And I seem to be a broken record, but I'm sure one of these stages HAS to break the GC wide open. We'll see if two hors category Pyrenees climbs will do it.

SPOILER - The Second Climb - Oh, boy!

Here are how the top eight riders came over the top of the col d’Aspin

1. Riccardo Ricco (SDV) 30pts
2. Sebastian Lang (GST) 26pts - at 35"
3. Bernard Kohl (GST) 22pts - at 1’15"
4. David De La Fuente (SDV) 18
5. Vincenzo Nibali (LIQ) 16pts
6. Oscar Pereiro (GCE) 14pts
7. Denis Menchov (RAB) 12pts
8. Luis Sanchez (GCE) 10pts

That's right. Ricco caught Lang and rocketed past him. Denis Menchov is in 7th and Oscar Pereiro was in 6th.

I'll let you know if people were blown off the back of the peloton in a second. More to watch and read. Back shortly.
