SPOILER - Top 11 in Stage 3

Here's how the top 11 fared in stage 3. I made it 11 because Team Columbia's riders Kirchen and Cavendish were 10 and 11. Will give entire standings later today or tonight.

SPOILER - Breakaway

I'm not saying that the breakaway will win today's stage 3, but with 51KM to go, the breakaway is about six minutes ahead of the peloton.

Actually, they are 6:44 ahead and there are four riders in that group. Watching the broadcast, the rain looks like it's stopped and there is sun on some parts of the course.

It's still not going to matter. AND that means that Valverde will not be in yellow tomorrow unless the peloton succeeds in yanking the breakaway back.

By the way, I misspelled peloton a few days ago and I apologize.

SPOILER - Stage 2 Winner

I can promise you that some of my posting days will be lighter than others. Today I was at the Boston Media Makers Breakfast at Doyles Pub in Jamaica Plain (BMM070608) while the Tour was being broadcast. SO, I didn't have a lot of firsthand experience about today's stage.

Here's a recap of the stories I read on today's Stage 2 in the 2008 Tour de France.

Norwegian cyclist Thor Hushovd won stage 2 of the 2008 Tour de France. He rides for the Credit Agricole team and this is reported to be his sixth TDF stage win.

Today's stage was about 102 miles (or 164 KM) and went from Auray France to Sait Brieuc.

Alejandro Valverde kept the leader's jersey with a one-second gap over the field (including team Columbia's Kim Kirchen and Cadel Evans of Austrailia also a second behind.

Post to come shortly with the standings after stage 2.

Saturday, July 5, 2008

10KM TO GO

Gap of 11 seconds and Cadel Evans is screaming up toward the breakaway with the peleton in tow.

SPOILER ALERTS ------ NO INFO HERE, but future posts will include the word "SPOILER" in the title if it gives info about stage winners on the day of that stage.

Will post in about 15 minutes about the winner and the standings after stage 1 of the 2008 Tour de France.

2008 Introspection

If I might comment on this year's Tour de France, I think it's being run in an effort to bring the title back to France.

Fewer international riders are represented (40 of the 180 are from France with by far the largest majority), only four Americans are in the race, and one entire squad has been left off the entry list. This being the team that had the winner in it last year.

The thing that makes me worry a little is what will 2009 look like if a Frenchman fails to win the Tour this year? Will it be a crit around the city of Paris with obstacles for anyone who's not a native?

Just thinking as I wait for the dispatches to update.

Gimme your thoughts...

Countries - Riders in the Tour

This year, according to the official site of the Tour de France, there are only FOUR Americans riding in the TDF.

Here's the listing of how the rider numbers break down across country lines...

The 180 riders in the 95th Tour represent 28 countries.

40: France
30: Spain
21: Italy
16: Germany
12: Belgium
10: The Netherlands
9: Australia
4: USA, Russia and Switzerland
3: Colombia, Great Britain and Luxembourg
2: South Africa, Austria, Belarus, Noway, Sweden and Ukraine
1: Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia

From the Netherlands

In a recent Radio Netherlands' news report, they said...

"The 95th edition of the Tour de France starts in Brest later this afternoon. For the first time since 1967 there is no prologue. The opening stage is a 197.5 kilometre race from Brest to Plumelec. The sprinters are expected to make a good showing as the first stage is fairly flat.

A number of cyclists including Denmark's Michael Rasmussen and last year's winner Alberto Contador, have been excluded from this year's tour due to drugs charges. This year's favourites are Australia's Cadel Evans, Spain's Alejandro Valverde and Russia's Denis Menchov."

I disagree about the way the drug charges comment was presented. Contador and his team are not in the race because of drug use (alleged) by some of his TEAM's riders. Contador was clean, otherwise the UCI et al would be hounding him like they did Floyd Landis.

Further, the Tour seems not to touch another country this year. I'm saying this without taking a closer look at the map, but it seems that everything stays within France for the 95th Tour de France.

Another great place for your updates

Bicycling Magazine is working in conjunction with the Boulder Report to give live blog updates throughout the race.

From my cursory look, this seems like one of the few sources for info that I'll be tapping as I follow the tour from thousands of miles away.

Versus TV Listings

Stuck in the United States and need your cycling fix? I'll be blogging regularly, but there's also TV to watch. Versus has the entire Tour de France (that's a total lie - it's nothing like the great coverage from Eurosport) on TV again this year.

Here are a bunch of screen shots of their scheduling line-up.

Race Map

Just a screen shot of the map. It's a very similar route to 2004 and hits many of the same towns. This includes Alpe d'Huez, Nimes and more. The only thing missing is a 21st team and Lance Armstrong.

Oh, and I was in France just prior to the 2004 Tour.
